What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as RLT and LLLT (low-level light therapy), typically uses LED technology to improve a number of ailments ranging from various skin conditions to issues with muscle tissues. The use of LEDs is preferred as they are nonablative — meaning they do not harm the skin's surface.

This treatment reduces inflammation, improves circulation, stimulates cells to repair themselves, and helps with general recovery from wear and tear. Many people also use it proactively before exercising, as increased circulation normally results in a better, more productive workout. In many cases, pain relief will be experienced during and following a session.

How does it work?

A red light therapy session consists of repetitively exposing your skin to red or infrared light. This process stimulates your body's cells, causing them to produce more energy and become more effective. That, in turn, results in inflammation being reduced, blood circulation improving, and an overall improvement in your healing process.

At the cellular level, the mitochondria — the source of a cell's energy — experience a biochemical effect that strengthens them. Improved electron transportation and oxygen consumption results in greater efficiency, so cells are more effective in what they do and can better engage in self-repair.

What to expect

Before your first session, your chiropractor will discuss your goals and any skin sensitivity to light. This helps determine the best wavelengths, session length, and treatment plan for you.

A single procedure usually lasts between 3 and 20 minutes. In many cases, you will use a red light therapy bed, which looks similar to a tanning bed but serves a very different purpose. It is best to wear minimal clothing so as much skin as possible is exposed to the light. During the session, you will likely feel a gentle warmth — most people report this to be a relaxing experience.

Red light panels and hand-held devices are also available for targeted treatment of smaller areas such as your back or a sore joint.

After your session

When your session ends, the lights will turn off. Get up slowly, especially after your first time, as some people experience brief lightheadedness.

Positive effects often include reduced swelling and pain, a relaxed mood, and improved sleep quality that evening. If you work out afterwards, you should experience a higher-quality workout. Some may notice limited and temporary swelling or redness, but these effects typically dissipate within minutes or hours.

Why pair with chiropractic care?

Chiropractic adjustments help relieve tension and improve joint mobility, while related inflammation can then be targeted and improved by red light therapy. RLT provides effective, short-term relief from pain and inflammation before or after a chiropractic procedure, while chiropractic care itself is a long-term solution.

Correcting a spinal misalignment also makes red light therapy more effective — even in ways not directly related to that realignment. A chiropractic adjustment combined with red light therapy can enhance your range of motion more than either treatment could do on its own.

  • Adjustments relieve tension & improve mobility
  • RLT targets post-adjustment inflammation
  • Combined, they enhance range of motion
  • Short-term relief + long-term correction
  • Improved nutrient & oxygen delivery to tissues

Frequently Asked Questions

Is red light therapy safe?

Typically, these procedures are safe. The main precaution is to avoid using a red light bed for more than 30 minutes, as burns and lesions can result. Most beds have built-in timers. Also make sure to use eye protection to keep your eyes safe.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your intended purpose. A general guideline is two or three 15-minute sessions a week, continued for one or more months. Your chiropractor will personalize your plan based on your goals and circumstances.

Can I combine red light therapy with chiropractic adjustments?

Yes. In fact, they often go hand in hand. Getting your spine aligned improves nervous system functioning, and following that with red light therapy further helps your tissues receive the nutrients and oxygen they need. RLT can also help your body heal from a chiropractic procedure by reducing resulting inflammation and pain.

Are there any side effects?

There are usually minimal or no side effects when used as intended. The most common effects are brief lightheadedness, swelling, or redness, all of which should dissipate in minutes or hours. During treatment, you may experience a tingling feeling or itching that goes away once the session ends.

Who should not use red light therapy?

Most people can use this therapy. Those who should refrain include people with cancer, organ transplant recipients, and those who are pregnant. If you have darker skin or skin vulnerable to light, speak with your health professional first, as hyperpigmentation is possible. People with tattoos may want to avoid using a red light bed on tattoo-covered skin.
